Maintaining a home is no easy task, and checking for problems can sometimes be a pain. One of the most important parts of a home system is the sewer line, but it can sometimes be difficult to tell when there is a problem. A clogged sewer line is not only inconvenient but also potentially very dangerous to your health. Luckily, there are some common warning signs that you should know about if you want to stay prepared for any situation.

Here are five ways you can tell if your sewer line is clogged:

1. The Sink Stops Draining

If water won't drain out of the sink or tub, then there could be signs that something is blocking up your sewer line. This could be a clog that is made of food waste and grease or something more sinister such as roots from nearby trees.

2. The Toilet Won't Flush

If the toilet usually flushes with no problems but suddenly stops consistently, you might have a sewer line blockage problem on your hands. When the toilet isn't able to flush properly it's time to check for signs of a blocked up pipe system that connects to the main drain in your home.

3. The Floors Are Sinking

Over time, if the water pressure and flow through your plumbing gets too low then floors can sink and begin to crack within your structure. One sign that you have a blocked sewer line is sagging floors especially around the toilet and sink locations. In this case, you need to hire a plumber immediately to check out your sewer line before any further damage can be done.

4. You Smell It

If your sewer blockage problem has gone on for a while, then it's possible that your home will start to smell really bad because sewer gas is being released into the air through cracks in the floor or other openings within the plumbing system.

5. You See Signs of Cracked Walls or Floors

Whether or not there is any evidence of leaking sewage in the home, if you see signs that the walls or floors are cracking then it could be a result of the flooring sinking due to a clogged sewer line. In this case, you should hire a plumber right away to deal with your problem before it gets worse.

If you think you may have a clogged sewer line, you should contact a plumber near you. The plumber will inspect the system and offer a suitable solution.

About Me
The Mind of a Plumber

Have you ever wished you could venture into the mind of a plumber and see how they think? We certainly have. We are always amazed how plumbers can design a system of pipes to fit a space and then have everything work so perfectly. They have a true talent — one that we have always sought to understand on a deeper level. That's actually why we created this blog. We are hoping to post articles here that give you a peek into the world of a plumber. And we know we will gain additional insight as we write about plumbers, too.
